ATTA's Tomorrow's Air Program Officially Launches

Incubated by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), the newly formed Tomorrow’s Air travel collective has officially launched, giving the industry an innovative way to combat the climate crisis and remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Climate change is a hot topic in the adventure travel industry, to be sure: According to ATTA research from July, 65% of adventure travelers want to know that their travel spending helped fight climate change, while 81% believe they can “make a difference with their actions and choices.”

Through a purchased subscription plan (which ranges from $10-$75 per month for 85-600 kilograms of  annual carbon removal), travelers can eliminate carbon from the air via high-tech, direct-air capture technology from Switzerland-based Climeworks, which then stores the carbon permanently underground.

“People are going to come out of this pandemic ready to travel, and wanting to reconnect,” said Casey Hanisko, president of ATTA and a leader on the Tomorrow’s Air team. “At the same time, we expect that many will be more alert to the carbon impacts of that travel, whether it be a road trip close to home or flights.”

Industry members are encouraged to sign the Clean Up Pact, which signals support for safe carbon removal and storage. Those interested in learning more can also join the “Pull Carbon Dioxide from the Air” experience via Airbnb’s Online Experiences Platform, where they can take a 60-minute virtual tour of Climeworks’ facility in Switzerland.
