Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has released its latest Camping Trips and Travel Experience report, revealing evolving trends shaping camping preferences for 2024.

The report, part of KOA’s ongoing Camping and Outdoor Hospitality series, highlights a growing desire among campers for immersive natural experiences shared with friends and family. The report is based on 4,100 surveys conducted among U.S. and Canadian households.

Key findings indicate that campers are increasingly prioritizing quality time and outdoor activities, and that top desired activities include fishing, hiking, scenic drives/sight-seeing, bird watching, stargazing, visiting historical sites and enjoying an adult beverage by a campfire. New trends in camping experiences show a rise in overlanding and backcountry camping, while glamping remains popular among first-time campers, with 32% trying it in 2023.

Reflecting changes in travel patterns, the report notes a 21% increase in shoulder and off-peak season travel, contrasting with a 4% decline during peak season. Reasons cited include overcrowding and inclement weather. Winter camping has also gained traction, with one in four active camping households participating in the 2023/2024 winter season, up from previous years.

RV ownership has doubled since 2014, and RV rental rates are projected to rise, with 1.9 million households expected to rent an RV in the upcoming year. Conversely, tent camping has seen a decline for the first time since 2014.

“As outdoor enthusiasts continue to seek diverse and elevated experiences, our latest reports shed light on the evolving landscape of camping,” said Toby O’Rourke, president and CEO of Kampgrounds of America, Inc. “For the past decade, KOA has utilized findings from our research to modernize and evolve within the camping landscape, allowing us to be the leaders in outdoor hospitality. This targeted report on travel experiences will ensure our industry continues to meet and exceed expectations of our guests to create safe, fun and fulfilling experiences for years to come.”

Looking ahead to 2024, campers express a desire to slow down and savor their experiences, with 48% prioritizing time with family and friends as their main travel consideration. Outdoor resorts designed for glamping and campgrounds offering extensive amenities are particularly favored for upcoming trips.
