Cruise Review: Disney Magic

Cruise Review: Disney Magic

“And Vladimir collects ceramic unicorns.”

Every time I hear this comical lyric from the song “I’ve Got a Dream” in the animated Disney film “Tangled,” I chuckle. But little did I know that the hilarious line would feature in Rapunzel’s Royal Table — just one of the many new or updated venues onboard Disney Cruise Line’s recently reimagined Disney Magic, which has been updated in time to commemorate the original ship and line’s 20th anniversary.

In “Tangled,” a group of seemingly gruff thugs prove to be musical, lovable misfits. Onboard Magic, they make an appearance at Rapunzel’s Royal Table to celebrate the birthday of the movie’s main character, princess Rapunzel. The detail in the fresh rotational dining room is superb — from thematic floating lanterns and a Fry Pan Sweet Bread dessert to Rapunzel and Flynn Rider singing with the live band and Vladimir sharing his ceramic collection with young patrons. The narrative and the cuisine, including a delicious pesto pasta entree, have replaced the former Carioca’s.

Also ensuring fresher food at Duck-In Diner, the poolside grill’s facilities have grown to prepare hamburgers and hot dogs a la minute. Clients will need those calories if they choose to climb to the top of the vessel to ride the thrilling AquaDunk and tamer Twist ’n’ Spout waterslides, or opt to interact with the playful AquaLab waterpark.

Elsewhere, Magic shines brightly thanks to an extensive dry-dock refurbishment that further updated Disney’s Oceaneer Club. Children can now enjoy Marvel Super Hero Academy — renamed from Marvel’s Avengers Academy — and Club Disney Junior, transformed from the Mickey Mouse Club. The former hosts popular activities with the likes of Captain America, while the latter reflects the company’s latest range of youth television franchises.

Andy’s Room has also been modified slightly — the safety rail height along the spiral stairs and upper edges has been raised — and tween club Edge has been updated, as well. A few walls have been removed, and an entry bar and soundproof flooring has been added. More significantly, teen lounge Vibe has been entirely overhauled, now featuring a hip new loft aesthetic lined with exposed concrete and catwalks overhead. A large flat-panel television serves as a focal point, and occupants can control the room’s lighting via an iPad.

Meanwhile, the adults-only Cove Cafe has been redesigned and filled with lush foliage and plush furniture. A signature salted caramel coconut latte is a joy to drink in the relaxed-casual environment, or outside at the adjacent Signals bar, which is now shaded and features a couple of televisions.

What’s more, the Rainforest Room in Senses Spa has been enhanced. The hydrotherapy aromatic showers are always soothing — a delightful deluge of warm or cool water pouring from oversize rain showers. And, of course, the adults-only After Hours area with Fathoms, Keys and O’Gills Pub is still along for the ride.

Finishing off the changes onboard Magic are photo gallery revisions to Shutters courtesy of touch-screen kiosks. Gone are the previous analog image binders and any photo waste thanks to an all-digital, print-on-demand format. As on Disney Wonder, a new portrait studio has been retrofitted. With less overall space required for photography, some floor space has made way for a Crown Jewelry store in the corner.

Next up for Disney Cruise Line is a near-doubling of its fleet through 2023 as it adds a trio of new ships to its existing four. Until then, Magic continues to tell a new story.
