According to the Transportation Security Administration, 9.8 million people were screened over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, which is about “300,000 higher than the same holiday weekend in 2019.” TSA added that Friday’s volume of 2.74 million passengers was its highest post-pandemic, single-day record.

Our Analysis: Air Travel Chaos Did Not Materialize, Yet

Many experts predicted that this summer season would be another one for the record books. With Memorial Day marking the launch of the summer travel season, it looks like many of those predictions are correct.

Fortunately, though, concerns of chaos and cancellations did not come to fruition, with cancellations below 1%, according to the Department of Transportation. Some are crediting this to relatively good weather, but continue to warn that the U.S. air travel system is not prepared for this summer’s travel demand.
