Riu Hotels & Resorts began in 1953 as a small hotel in Mallorca. The company now encompasses locations worldwide, with most of its locations in Spain. The hotels are divided into three brands, which vary in levels of luxury and amenities.
Riu Hotels & Resorts form the bulk of the Riu chain. Hotels typically feature on-site bars, at least one on-site restaurant, an entertainment area, conference room, Internet access (additional charge), outdoor and/or indoor pools, children's pool, complimentary gym, health and beauty center (additional charge), complimentary lounge chairs, parasols and towels (deposit required), poolside snack bar and children's playground.
Guest room amenities usually include bath with bidet, hair dryer, phone, air-conditioning and heating, minibar, satellite TV, and a balcony or terrace. Suites and studios with kitchenettes and a living room area are also available. All meals are available at on-site dining facilities and are served buffet style. Many resorts are all-inclusive, which include breakfast and dinner in the total cost. Light lunches can be purchased for an additional charge. Many hotels are located near a golf course, have games such as table tennis available on-site, and provide daytime and evening entertainment programs several times a week.
The Luca Hotels & Resorts brand also belongs to Riu. The brand includes several locations in Europe, and one in Cape Verde. These hotels have similar amenities to the Riu Hotels, but are often larger than other Riu locations in Europe.
Riu Plaza Hotels represent Riu's move into the urban market, with its premier hotel in Panama. These hotels aim to please business and leisure travelers alike, offering multiple on-site restaurants, a spa and wellness center, and ample meeting space. Guest rooms include room service, minibar, living area, central air-conditioning, phone, TV, hair dryer, coffeemaker, in-room safe, and iron and ironing board. Complimentary high-speed Internet is available in the rooms, and a Wi-Fi hotspot can also be found on the premises. Deluxe rooms, suites and the penthouse are also available for the more discerning traveler.
