The safari industry in Africa is witnessing significant shifts in 2024, as revealed in the State of Safari travel report from safari planner Go2Africa. The report highlights a remarkable surge in global interest in African safaris, with search volumes more than doubling compared to 2022.

Go2Africa’s report also unveils a notable trend toward higher budgets for safari experiences. The average safari budget has increased by 25% in the last year alone, now ranging from $5,500 to $6,500. This upward shift in budgets reflects an evolving preference among travelers for enhanced safari experiences.

In terms of demographics, the largest percentage of safari-goers in 2023 were those traveling with their partners (47%). Families made up 31%, solo travelers 12% and friends 11%.

Sustainability continues to be a priority for safari-goers, with the report indicating a steady growth in interest over the years, culminating in a staggering 1,000% increase in interest in sustainable safaris over the last four years.

"Right now, we have a few travelers who have specifically asked if they can volunteer for a day on their safari, so we're definitely seeing an increase in our guests' interest in sustainability and connection with the local communities," said Liesel Van Zyl, head of positive impact at Go2Africa.

Additionally, the report highlights the growing popularity of combined beach-safari vacations, with travelers seeking to pair the thrill of wildlife explorations with relaxing coastal experiences. Interest in travel to Zambia and Malawi rose by 78% and 41%, respectively, from 2022 to 2023, while the Seychelles has seen an increase in visitors. Overall, the report found a 20% increase in interest in beach and safari combo trips, and a 22% rise in the desire for trips that include rest and relaxation.

“Zambia and Malawi combination safaris are very popular at the moment,” Van Zyl said. “Zambia offers some great value with more untouched, uncrowded parks to explore compared to some of the more hectic areas in Southern Africa. It’s also a quick one-hour hop and a skip to Malawi for incredible beach and freshwater snorkeling, kayaking and African sundowners."
