Travel Bucket List: Trekking in Petra, Jordan

Travel Bucket List: Trekking in Petra, Jordan

My six-day journey with Jordan-based tour operator Terhaal Adventures included one of Jordan’s greatest treks. We entered Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, via a spectacular Bedouin backdoor trail in the mountains.

During the trip, I came face to face with one of the area’s most impressive sites — the immense rock-cut facade of Ad Deir, also known as “The Monastery” — before traversing down the stone steps of a Nabataean processional that led us into the heart of Petra. After passing several slot canyons, we came across the site’s most famous monument, Al-Khazneh or “The Treasury.”

Near Petra is another UNESCO World Heritage Site: Wadi Rum, a valley cut into the surrounding sandstone and granite rock. The dramatic landscape is perfect for camping, photographing, hiking and climbing, all while enjoying Bedouin hospitality along the way.
